This is what a Credit Karma score of 620 means

Wollit TeamWollit Team4 minutes read · Updated 24th April 2025

Credit Karma is a website that offers a free service that lets you check your credit scores and reports. In the UK, Credit Karma uses TransUnion’s scoring system, which ranges from 0 to 710. TransUnion’s range is different from other credit agencies like Experian and Equifax, which have their own scoring systems.

This means that your 620 score means something different on Credit Karma than on ClearScore or Experian.

If your score is 620 on Credit Karma, then you fall in the ”Good” category on TransUnion. This is the second-highest credit score band and it can put you in a great position for getting good deals on loans, credit cards, or mortgages. However, you probably won’t get the very best deals.

Why is my credit score 620 on Credit Karma?

Not having the very best credit score can be due to many reasons, but usually if you’re in the “Good” category then it’s down to three things:

  • You might have missed paying a few bills a while ago. Nothing too concerning to lenders but still not the best thing to have in your file.
  • You might have recently moved to the UK and only have a couple years of credit history, usually from a mobile phone contract or a credit card. Your credit file is still a bit thin.
  • Or you might simply be new to credit for other reasons, like having recently graduated and only started using a credit card. Another thin credit file situation.

Is having a 620 credit score on Credit Karma good enough?

TransUnion (where Credit Karma gets your score from) is the UK’s third largest credit reference agency. Still, plenty of banks and lenders rely on it when reviewing your credit application.

If your TransUnion credit score is 620, it’s in the “Good” band. This is also how we would describe your situation. You’ll pass almost any credit check and you’ll be offered the products you want, but you simply won’t get the very best deals.

In other words, lenders know that you are a responsible borrower, but still have a few concerns about you.

This means that you won’t qualify for the best deals on the market – and the difference can really add up.

For example, a small jump of 0.5% in interest rate for an average £400,000 mortgage taken for 30 years can add up to almost £50,000 over the life of the mortgage.

How can I improve my 620 Credit Karma score?

Being in the “Good” credit score band should be something to celebrate.

However, having to pay tens of thousands of pounds more for simply not having the best credit score can be frustrating. This is why it’s so important to improve your score so you can get into the “Excellent” band.

Here are some tips:

  • Always use an eligibility checker to see if you qualify, in theory, for a loan. Since each credit application requires a hard credit check (which can lower your score), you want to keep those to a minimum.
  • Register to vote at your current address, and update your registration every time you move. This helps lenders verify your identity, which is why TransUnion gives a small credit score bonus if you do it.
  • Try to have your credit card balances lower than 25% of your credit card limit. This is what credit agencies like TransUnion recommend.
  • Set up direct debit or a payment reminder so you don’t miss any payments on any bills. Some banking apps also alert you to upcoming payments – always check those notifications.
  • Finally, if what’s keeping your credit score behind is some mistake in the past or a thin credit file, then building a strong recent credit history could help push your credit score into the “Excellent” band.

This is what lenders want to see anyway, and this is where an app like Wollit can help.

Wollit helps improve your credit by reporting your monthly subscription as loan repayments to all three major credit agencies, including TransUnion, which Credit Karma uses. This improves your credit history, the key factor affecting your score.

Additionally, Wollit can report your rent payments to your credit file. While this won’t appear in your Credit Karma account (as Wollit reports rent to Experian for now), it can still make a difference. It will show lenders that, despite past mistakes or short credit history, you consistently pay your bills on time.

Eventually, you should be able to move into the “Excellent” credit score band and save tens of thousands of pounds in interest.
