How can I report my rent to the credit agencies?

If you rent your home in the UK, you might not know that you can report your rent payments to the credit reference agencies (CRAs). This can help improve your credit file, making it easier to get loans and mortgages in the future. Here’s how to report your rent payments and why you should do it.

Can rent payments improve my credit score?

In the past, rent payments did not affect credit scores because they were not reported to credit agencies. However, now you can report your rent payments, and credit agencies are working on ways to include these payments into your credit score calculation.

Plius, by showing that you pay your rent on time, you can prove to lenders that you are responsible with money.

What are the benefits of reporting rent payments?

While right now reporting rent payments doesn’t directly improve your credit scores (at least not with most of the main credit agencies), you can get other benefits from it:

  • A higher chance of getting approved for a loan.
  • A way to build your credit history if you’re new to the UK.
  • And potentially an increase in your credit score whenever the CRAs finalise including this into their credit score calculations.

How can I report my rent payments?

There are several services that can help you report your rent payments:

  1. Experian's Rental Exchange: This free service lets you report your rent payments directly to Experian through your landlord. You can use this service if you live in council housing or rent from an agency that manages more than 500 properties.
  2. Canopy or CreditLadder: These services allow you to report your rent payments to all three major credit agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion).
  3. Wollit. Wollit also allows you to report your rent to Experian, UK’s largest credit agency. However, unlike other services, Wollit also reports your subscription as a loan repayment to all three credit agencies, which builds your actual credit history. This is the main factor that matters for your credit score.

Whichever service you choose is up to you. The most important part is that you make the most out of this opportunity – and make the most out of your rent payments while you prepare to eventually become a homeowner yourself.
