How much will my credit score go up when a debt judgement is removed?

If you have a CCJ, you should know that the Registry Trust will automatically remove the County Court Judgement (CCJ) from your credit file after six years without you having to do anything.

You can also remove the CCJ if you manage to pay the debt in full within the first 30 days after receiving the judgement but, of course, that’s a bit harder.

Will my credit score go up after the CCJ has been removed?

Yes, you can breathe – your credit score will most likely improve once the CCJ is removed from your credit file or when six years have passed.

It won’t impact your credit score after that anymore and your future lenders won't see your defaults.

How much will my credit score go up when a CCJ is removed?

Your credit score should go up quite a bit once your CCJ is removed from your credit record.

However, it is hard to give you a clear estimate on how big your score improvement will be, as credit scores depend on many things.

On average, most people see an increase of about 200-250 points.

But you shouldn't wait six years. You can still fix your credit file even if you have CCJs on your file.

One way to do it is by using credit builder tools like Wollit. We report your monthly plan payments to all three credit reference agencies, as well as your regular rent payments to Experian – giving you a chance to show lenders that you’re financially responsible.

Will my lenders see a CCJ after it's been removed?

It depends on a few things.

If you paid off the debt within one month of the CCJ being issued, the CCJ is removed from your credit file as if it never existed.

If you paid off your debt after one month, and it's been less than six years since the CCJ was issued, the CCJ will still show up on your credit report. The good part is that it will show up as "satisfied," so the lenders will at least know that you're a good borrower.

After six years, your CCJ will be removed from your credit report automatically, regardless of whether you paid the debt. Lenders won't be able to see it anymore, but they might still ask you if you ever had one. Still, there won't be any impact to your credit score, and old CCJs, in any case, carry less weight than newer ones.

How do I check if a CCJ has been removed?

If a court sets aside a judgement, it will notify TrustOnline to remove it from its public register. You can check if a CCJ has been set aside using your case number on TrustOnline.

If your CCJ still shows up in your credit report, contact the credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), and they will help speed up the CCJ removal process.
